CASA DEL MOLINERO
(Sleeps up to six)

'Casa del Molinero' means the Millers House and is situated in the Andalucian mountains approx 35Kms, less than one hours drive north east of Malaga airport.

Casa del Molinero is adjacent to an old olive mill - 'El Molino' which is our home.

Being hundreds of years old, it has been built in traditional Andalucian style with whitewashed walls of local rock and stone, and ceilings with eucalyptus beams.

There is a shaded terrace with a barbeque and garden furniture, ideal for dining 'al fresco'. Beyond this, there is a swimming pool with sunbathing terrace. The pool measures 7m x 3.5, 2m deep end, 1.2m shallow end.

The main doors open to the dining area with steps leading down to the kitchen which features original beams and chimney.

Behind the kitchen is a small room with full size bunk beds and wash hand basin. Straight through the dining area leads into a twin bedded room with en-suite shower room and upstairs leads to the lounge with small T.V.(Spanish) video recorder and video library. CD/DVD/MP3 player. There is also a small library of books.

On this floor there is also a double bedroom & separate shower room.

Setting

The house faces south east looking towards Comares which stands 739mts above sea level and is believed to be one of the last Moorish strongholds of southern Spain.

To the east across Almond and Olive groves, one can see the Sierra Tejeda mountain range which encompasses the mountains of Maroma, higher than Snowdon and snowcapped for much of the year. To the west you will see mount Mazmullar where there is an old Arabic water storage system.

Climbing to the remains of the ancient fortress known as 'La Tahona' one can appreciate a panoramic view of the entire village of Comares.

Donkeys, mules and oxen are still used for transport and ploughing, and local goatherds are a regular sight along the tracks and roads, making the slower pace of life here very appealing, as does the superb climate with over 300 days of sunshine every year.

Tranquillity also prevails with the main background noise being the hum of crickets and the distinctive sound of goat bells across the mountains on hot, sleepy afternoons. In the springtime the area is a mass of flora and fauna, making it a walkers and bird spotters paradise.

arrival

Luggage trolleys are readily available at Malaga airport, they are free. If you have hired a car, the information sheet from the car hire company should tell you how to locate their office.

Some cars are collected at the airport itself, in which case, as you are leaving the baggage hall you will see a ramp to your right which lead you down to the collection point. Some cars are collected a short distance from the airport and there is always a courtesy bus to transport you and your luggage to the collection point.

As you leave the baggage lounge you will go through some automatic doors into the arrivals hall, turn to your right and go out of the main doors, turn right again and walk along the pavement past the taxi rank until you see a bus stop. The courtesy busses for all the main car hire companies stop at this point.

The directions given on the find us page should bring you to the house without any problems, but if you do have any difficulties please do not hesitate to phone us. We will ensure that someone, if not ourselves, is at El Molino to meet you on arrival and show you to Casa del Molinero.

Tea bags, coffee, sugar, milk & water are provided at the start of your stay but if you are going to arrive late we can always get some provisions in for you as very few shops are open on Sundays.

Shopping and Surrounding Areas / Places to Visit

Approx ten minutes (6Kms) drive away you will find the tiny hilltop village of Comares from which there are many magnificent views as far as the Mediterranean.

Here in Comares you will find a small supermarket which supplies most general requirements, and a pharmacy, where you will be able to obtain most medicines. Medication is well subsidised in Spain and can therefore be purchased over the counter much cheaper than prescriptions cost in England. There is a tobacconist in the plaza, and it is here that you can purchase stamps - 'cellos' (pronounced seyos) as well as sweets and cigarettes. The opening hours for these facilities are 9-2 and 5-8.

You can also find two banks in Comares plaza which open Mon - Fri 8:30am - 2pm. Cash and travellers cheques can be changed here. Should you wish to use bankers or credit cards to make withdrawals, both banks have 24hr. cash point machines. There is also a 24hr. cashpoint machine on the main stretch of Benamargosa, approx 12Kms away.

Comares has several bar / restaurants where you can meet the friendly locals and partake in tapas and the regional wine, - 'Vino de Terreno' - wine of the land, it's like sweet sherry. Or you may prefer Rioja, a delicious red wine on its own or, when mixed with lemonade & ice, makes a long refreshing drink - 'Tinto de Verrano' - summer wine.

A ten minute drive further along our road past the house, will take you to Los Ventorros where there is a bar / restaurant that serves very reasonably priced meals and drinks. Adjacent to which there is an English owned Aladins cave of hand made crafts and food, home grown herbs and vegetarian products.

The town of Velez-Malaga is 30 mins (25Kms) drive away where there is a shopping precinct 'El Ingenio' with a large supermarket (10.00am. - 10.00 pm.) Also there is a street market on Thursday until 2pm.

The nearest coastal resort, with sandy beaches and an abundance of bars, discos, restaurants and shops to suit every taste and budget, is Torre del Mar, 45 mins (30Kms) away, where there is also a street market held on a Thursday. Should you wish to purchase typically English foods, these can be obtained from supermarkets such as Eroski in El Engenio centre at Velez-Malaga or Consum and Supersol in Torre del Mar.

The major city & port of Malaga, the beautiful old town of Nerja & the stunningly turquoise lake of Vinuela can all easily be reached by car.

.

Medical

There is a 24hr emergency service at the 'centro de salud' - medical centre, situated in a side road next to the town hall and sign posted as you exit Benamargosa.

The nearest hospital is close to the aqua park opposite El Ingenio in Velez-Malaga. For free medical treatment you will require a photocopy of both sides of your E111 form and it is advisable to carry these copies at all times. They are obtainable from most post offices in the U.K. and entitle you to free medical treatment in any E.U. country.

Beasties and other biting things

Andalucia does not to the best of our knowledge, have any poisonous creatures, some may look a little scary, but are harmless. Every Spanish farmhouse has a resident gecko......good for keeping mosquitoes at bay.

If you are coming in summer there will be mosquitoes and we advise using repellents especially in the evenings. If you are likely to react badly to bites or stings, it is probably wise to bring anti-histamine or other medication that suits you.

All the windows have mosquito netting, so providing the door isn't left open, it should keep most of them out.

General Information

We ensure that an English speaking person is contactable throughout your stay in the event of an emergency.

There is a folder which provides information about surrounding areas, sight seeing and other activities.

Linen

Fresh linen and towels will be provided at the end of each week. Beach towels are provided for use around the pool.

Water

Sometimes during the summer months the water is rationed and we are not informed how long the rationing will last although it is usually only a few hours. Tap water is potable although we would recommend you drink bottled water.

Electricity

The electricity does go off at times but is usually restored quickly.
There is a fuse box above the washing machine. If you overload the supply it will trip the circuit, in this event ensure that all the switches are in the up position.
Don't forget that any appliances you bring from the U.K. will need an adaptor.
